    Activities for use with the short story “The Birthmark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Includes a variety of options to fit your classroom needs. Reading questions and graphic organizers available to guide students in understanding and analysis of the text. Vocabulary activity to assist student comprehension. Culminating projects include a set of 9 culminating projects offered as Task Cards, Choice Boards and Student Menu. Stand Alone projects include personal writing, alternate point of view, and newspaper writing. Answers keys and rubrics included for ease of use.


    Reading Activities : Set of reading questions in order of the text. Also, critical thinking questions with short rubric and optional paragraph model. Graphic organizers include Veen diagrams, word webs, Alymer’s Experiments chart, and Georgiana’s reactions. Keys provided.

    Vocabulary: Includes 55 terms (words and phrases) found in the text. Student term list is in order of the text. Can be completed before hand to create a handy reader’s reference sheet. Task cards provided for use with jigsawing. Answer key with definitions included.

    Personal Writing : Personal writing activity where students write a narrative essay on a time they were unappreciated, just as Aylmer does not appreciate his wife. Includes prewriting printables and rubric. Plus, full set of materials for a multimedia project instead of an essay.

    Literary Essay Choice of 4 essay topics to choose from along with planning worksheet. Plus, rubric and Quick Guide to Literary Essays.

    Alternate Point of View Project: Fun creative writing activity. Students write from Aminadab’s point of view. They will need to consider how he would interpret the events of the text while adjusting to how Aminidab’s style would be different. (This is also one of the options in the Culminating Projects set)

    Newspaper Writing: Combine creative and real-world writing with this activity. Students will write an article about the death of Georgiana—what would Aylmer reveal to the paper? Rubric include.

    Culminating Projects Set of 9 culminating projects for the story. Offered in three formats: Task Cards, Choice Board, and Student Menu. Rubrics included. The Alternate Point of View is also a separate stand-alone project. In addition, the analysis “Doe Aylmer deserve the outcome” is also one of the literary essay choices.
