THINKING STATIONS is a great way to get your students talking about the story, analyzing text, and relating the story to real life. There are 8 stations and students rotate around the room to answer the questions with their group. Students move, collaborate, discuss, analyze, synthesize, and think critically in this activity. One of the stations has students comparing a modern article to the story, which gives students some practice with non-fiction text.

I have also included the task stations on one handout for students who are absent and miss the activity or for those who are mooching off their classmates without participating. Those who don't help out can move to a desk by themselves and complete the task alone.

The station cards come in black and white as well as color. The good thing is that you only have to print them once. They are on half sheets, so the task is big enough for everyone in the group to see. One card per station.

*Detailed answer key.

"The Birthmark" ABRIDGED & MORE is a great way to teach this story if you have reluctant or low readers. Nathaniel Hawthorne can be quite wordy, so I have gone through the story and taken out wordy parts and rephrased others. The story is kept very close to the original and uses Hawthorne's words most of the time. This condensed version takes the long, original story down to 7 pages. The paragraphs are also separated with a space for an easier reading format.

►A clean 7 page abridged copy of "The Birthmark"

►A 20 question reading guide printed 2 to a page for easy printing

►Answer key for reading guide

►30 Question final test on the story in 2 versions to deter cheaters.

►Answer key for final test

►Final test comes in an editable PowerPoint.

Covers, credits, and original story pages do not count in the page total. Duplicates such as black and white copies in addition to the colored ones are not counted. Only teacher usable pages are counted.
Depending on which activities you choose in this packet, "The Birthmark" Unit can last anywhere from 3 to 7 days.
