This 2 page worksheet has 3 parts. In Part 1 the students match the definitions to the examples of figurative language Poe uses in his short story; a word bank is provided: parallel structure, foreshadowing, onomatopoeia, alliteration, contrast, irony, classical allusion, Biblical allusion, personification, metaphor, and simile. In Part 2, using the same terms from the word bank, students match the figurative language terms to an example. Part 3 comprises 25 direct quotations from "The Black Cat," and students identify the figurative language in each quotation. A two page answer KEY is provided.
