In this document, you have purchased a twenty-four-page summary of Lloyd Alexander’s classic novel The Black Cauldron. Throughout the summary, I have noted literary elements, such as foreshadowing, the literary number of three, personification, et cetera.
In addition, I have inserted a few pictures to boost comprehension of this complex tale. I use the summary to refresh my memory before having a literary discussion with the class. I find this to be much more effective and time efficient than using Post-its and margin notes. You can also share this document with students by either printing it, posting it, or projecting it and reading it aloud to the class. It all depends on the needs of the students. It is invaluable when students miss class. For students with IEP’s, it can serve as a study guide.
Because this is such a dense novel, I created this summary to help me keep track of the plot sequence and to help me connect events later in the novel with the foreshadowing in the beginning chapters. If you need other materials for this novel, look on my TpT page. You will find, a close-reading guide, reading assessments, vocabulary lists and tests, and more.
