In this document, expect to find detailed close-reading questions for Lloyd Alexander’s novel The Black Cauldron
, which I created to help students return to the story to uncover deeper meaning. This document will save you hours of time—it is well worth the investment. I do not intend for students to answer every question for every chapter; rather, you could select sections of the questions for students to answer orally with a reading peer so that they can practice the technique of skimming and scanning, rereading, summarizing, inferring, and making decisions. The document also helps students to review before a reading assessment and functions as a guide for students who have missed the chapter discussion due to absence or inattention. It pairs nicely with The Black Cauldron
reading assessments that I have on my TpT page. Here is the link: Black Cauldron Reading Assessments
This sort of document helps you to differentiate instruction as you can use the questions in a whole-class review, for individual student review, or for peer review. You might like to have students answer certain questions in writing and/or answer questions orally to themselves or with a peer.
