In this document, you will find a reading comprehension assessment for every chapter of Lloyd Alexander’s classic fantasy novel The Black Cauldron. Throughout the quizzes, I have used a variety of question techniques: true-false, multiple choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and cloze. I have grouped the chapters into manageable chunks and have included an answer key for each.
As always, take a look at the answer keys first so that you cover the information that is included in each assessment. Use the preview document that I offer to determine if this package of assessments will satisfy the needs of your students.
The assessments are challenging, so you should feel comfortable with allowing students to sit for the assessments with reading notes and/or the novel in hand. For honors-level students, these aids may be eliminated. In this way, you are satisfying differentiation requirements. And don’t forget how much students like to take assessments with partners.
