This is a primary source activity that requires students to examine several primary sources related to dealings between the Spanish colonists and Native Americans. Students use these sources to evaluate the "Black Legend" and determine if there is truth to it. Part of the activity requires students to view an episode of "Crash Course US History," which can be easily located on YouTube. All documents necessary to answer the questions are included.
This can be done as an group or individual assignment. I break the assignment up and include time for discussion.
This activity can also be used in conjunction with a broader examination of the colonial period or as a thematic look at the treatment of Native populations in US History. I have several other assignments from this period that would work well as preparation for or follow up to this assignment.
