Take your students on an adventure with a timeless novel: The Black Stallion
, by Walter Farley. This novel unit includes four modules: Writing Responses, Vocabulary, Springboard to Writing, and Choice Boards.
Students construct thorough responses for two prompts after every two chapters of The Black Stallion
. It includes a unit overview; a response planning sheet; modeling mini posters; four worksheets on describing events, settings, or characters; one worksheet on determining point of view, four worksheets of prompts for writing responses; a two-page summarizing activity; and three rubrics that correspond to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for third, fourth, and fifth grades.
Children determine the exact meanings of multiple-meaning words, use context clues, explore specialized vocabulary, and figure out meanings for figurative language.
Springboard to Writing:
Excerpts from the book act as springboards for student writing. The module includes lesson plans, mini posters, and student activity sheets for narrative writing, descriptive writing, and writing dialogue.
These activities, designed for use after reading The Black Stallion
, can be used with an entire class, a small group, or an individual child. Because the cards require higher order thinking skills, they work especially well with gifted and talented (GATE) learners. The independent nature of the activities frees the teacher to work with other groups of students.
