The Bluest Eye lesson plan is a three-week, day-by-day plan. The ideas looked at in Day 1 of the plan (see preview) are ideas explored throughout the lesson. We read literary criticism for a deeper understanding of the novel and its early/mid 20th century setting. We view and analyze Spike Lee's Bamboozled along with clips from the two films mentioned in the novel, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms and Imitation of Life. We read, analyze and artistically interpret Thylias Moss' poem, "The Lynching." Finally, we look at Langston Hughes' "A Dream Deferred" before writing an essay on a similar idea in the novel.
The Bluest Eye plan here is of the first four days. Note: bolded headings in each day's plan are transitional points within the class hour. All homework/handouts are copy-ready (see Blood Meridian preview and description for an example). As with all of my lesson plans, use what works; dispense with what doesn't. Enjoy!
