The Book Thief Creative Inquiry Project is designed to address a current instructional emphasis on inquiry-based projects, differentiated instruction (student choice), and the co-construction of success criteria. Academic students in 9-12, especially A.P. and gifted students, will love this assignment because it offers something for everyone.
The essence of the assignment is a detailed Choice Board with embedded URL links to support learning. You might not be a master of teaching film but can direct students to quality resources online that can.
Students design a creative artifact that best reflects their interests and talents but also challenges them to try something new. They are assessed according to general success criteria (provided) and specific success criteria (co-constructed).
Students are offered nine, detailed projects in this package - but can negotiate their own project terms if they seek something else. After some brainstorming, students propose and discuss a project idea with you (the teacher). In all, this project is designed to derive a student's mark from both general and specific success criteria. They must produce the artifact according to general success criteria (provided) and specific success criteria (negotiated according to the creative conventions associated with the form they wish to use). This allows you to assess authentically for differentiation.
Students submit their creative artifact, and a reflection (in which they provide evidence that demonstrates how they grappled with the project criteria).
Hope your students love this as much as mine did!
