20 extension activities designed to test students' knowledge of the movie, their ability to see events from more than one viewpoint and their ability to write in different styles/formats. This is a bundle of HIGH ORDER assignments / activities which could be used for both the movie and novel The Book Thief.
Many tasks require students to imagine that they are characters in the story, and then to write in the voice of that character using an appropriate register and tone.
16 of the assignments are WRITING exercises, so they are also designed to improve student's abilities in different styles of writing. Styles include:
- Diary Entries
- Letters (formal and informal)
- Dialogue (to be acted out afterwards)
- Interview Questions
- Newspaper Report
- Application Form Design
- Creative Writing / Short Story
Four of the tasks are Research / Presentation Projects.
All assignments include hints, sub-headings or structure guides to provide a starting point or scaffolding to help students get started.
These writing tasks give students an opportunity to show a deep understanding of the text, as well as to practice writing in different formats. Many of the activities could be used for summative assessment.
This is a Word document, so you can edit the activities to suit your class.
The preview file includes a selection of the tasks.
