The following set of journal entries is designed to accompany student reading and analysis of The Book Thief. Over the course of studying the novel, the teacher will assign students to complete a series of DIGITAL journal entries that examine how the author develops the central issues and themes concerning major characters and events in the novel.
Teachers can determine the value of each journal entry or opt to choose an overall value for the completion of all journal entries. The entries serve as excellent homework and reflection pieces for students, and they can also be used for in-class discussions, essay format assessment questions, or even the components of a post-reading Socratic Seminar. Teachers should feel free to structure the use of the journal entries to best suit their instructional setting and timeframe.
