The Book Thief, based on the 2005 novel by Markus Zusak, is an insightful journey into the life of a German family during WWII. Engage students with this movie guide that encourages deep thinking about the issues behind the Nazi regime and how they systematically stole the humanity away from so many people. There is also plenty of beauty in this movie as students explore the relationships between the brave characters in this film, their character traits and how Liesel develops her literary skill.
Discuss with your students the 12 high-level, short answer and essay questions by pausing at the designated times on the movie guide. See the thumbnails for example questions and the preview file for higher resolution sample questions.
An answer key is not included as many questions are open-ended and encourage students to analyze the film. Many answers will not fit into a 'box'. Students are encouraged to construct their own meaning from the characters' dialogue and behavior. On average, completing this movie guide will require about 30-45 minutes in addition to the length of the movie.
