This 22 page Word document is a detailed synopsis of the plot of the The Book Thief in 'Fill in the blanks' format.
Students demonstrate their understanding of the plot by completing the cloze test. It could be used for assessment or for revision. I use this as we are reading the novel. I ask students to work on this task at the end of every section (every four chapters). This is instead of asking them to write their own summary. As a specialist teacher for weaker students, I find this approach a very useful support for those who need scaffolding to help them focus on core plot elements. All students benefit from knowing the story well, before moving on to more complex and challenging activities.
This is an active learning activity that students enjoy. They see it as a fun task.
There are two pages to complete for each of the ten sections of the book (one page = four chapters), and single pages for the Prologue and Epilogue. In total there are 22 pages for students to complete.
A word bank is provided at the end of each page to assist students. You could redact this to make it more challenging, and to get students to use their own words.
The solution (17 pages) is also included.
The preview file is the first page of Part One, i.e. the "fill in the blanks" activity, and its solution.
