Teachers should preface how they intend for students to complete this activity. It is designed to function in a number of formats: competition, partnered competition, text analysis quiz, homework reading, etc. After selecting how they want students to complete the activity, teachers can also include feedback and discussion components to allow for a deeper reading of the selected pages.
Text Analysis Race Instructions
After reading this portion of the novel, students will participate in an engaging text analysis challenge. Once students have completed the questions, they will bring their answers to the teacher. Once students have answered all questions correctly, each student will write their name and their completion time on the board.
This activity functions wonderfully as a competition, but it can also be used in a non-competitive sense. Students can be required to work alone or allowed to work with a partner/group. Typically, 15-20 minutes would be the average amount of time needed for all students in a class to respond to these questions, but teachers should feel free to shorten or lengthen the duration of time students have to complete the activity based on their judgment.
