Product Description

This creative writing exercise uses a photo stimulus of a wooden chest to encourage students to consider how they can address the sensory impact of the image without saying 'I can see', 'I can hear' etc, and develop from initial basic writing into more creative descriptions. There is plenty of scope for class discussion and sharing excellent words and phrases (lots of space for this to be worked with whiteboard projection), independent work, and peer marking.

A year 8 (age 12) student in my class moved from 'I can see a glow of suspicious light around the chest, I cannot hear a thing, it is deathly quiet' to 'an eerie glow surrounded the archaic chest, it seemed to engulf any sound in its ominous presence' - not bad!

BONUS EXERCISE: for the exemplar answer, I have students work in group to identify why it works, what techniques are there, and usually use some kind of points system and timer to keep the competition fierce!
