The Boy Who Loved Words by Roni Schotter is a great book for introducing the concept of loving words, as well as using vivid vocabulary. The book is a great jumping off point for in-depth word study.

The Boy Who Loved Words is a Common Core focus book for grade 3, but is recommended for grades 2-5. I use it with my middle school English Language Learners.

The book is about a boy who collects words. It comes with a glossary of over 60 words used in the book. Many of these words are rare in the English language. Thus, I focused my guide on developing the understanding of eight Tier 2 words used in the book.

The Focus Words Are:

dusk, passion, hesitate, scrumptious, disburse, periphery, harmony, encounter

• An assessment of the eight focus vocabulary words (can be used as a pre and post assessment)
• Two differentiated documents containing seven questions aligned to the common core (one document requires students to cite two sources, one requires citation of one source)
