The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Movie Guide

"Very comprehensive way to study this movie. My 8th graders loved this resource."

This is a 5-7 day unit that covers everything in the film regarding the background to Auschwitz to how the gas chambers actually work. See below for details about what I have included.

I want you to feel like you have options in teaching about the Holocaust so I am merely giving you 5-7 days worth of ideas that can be assembled in a number of different ways.

THE SECOND SEMESTER OF WORLD HISTORY

Here is what is included:

- Intro to Holocaust PPT (9 slides)
- Boy in Striped Pajamas Guide (3 pages)
- Boy in Striped Pajamas Key
- Gas Chambers
- A Day in the Life at a camp
- Intro to Auschwitz Camp history
- Additional Resources Video links and questions

DAY 1:

I have created an introduction PPT that gives a nice background to the Holocaust. It just helps the students understand what was going on and why it was happening.

OR

The first day is a reading activity and writing activity. The students will be taking notes on the question WHY WAS AUSCHWITZ BUILT AND WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL PURPOSE? This would make for a great paragraph to write with my free paragraph (included). The reading is 7 pages with pictures and lends itself for the students to take 1 page of notes to be used to write the paragraph. This is an intro to the movie as the movie takes place next to Auschwitz.

DAY 2 AND 3 AND 4:

Pass out student study guide explaining the main characters in the movie, which are listed at the top of the sheet. The students should be able to follow along and answer the questions after watching. I like to go over the answers with the students after each day. If students are absent they can watch it on Netflix or Amazon.

I would probably want to go over all the answers after the movie finishes or show the included author interview.

DAY 5 AND 6:

PART A READING: At the end of the movie there is a pretty detailed scene with the gas chambers. I thought it was a good idea to look at the gas chambers and how they were run and how they worked. I found a primary source document that discusses what was going on with the gas chambers and how this will lead to the crematorium. I have my students read this and then prepare them either for a writing assignment or a discussion on what took place in the gas chambers. This is also a great time to go over the number of camps (picture included) and where they were in Europe.

PART B READING: This reading is the same length as the above, front and back of one piece of paper. It is a detailed account of one person's experience at Auschwitz. I think that after each side of the class could read the different readings answering the bigger question of HOW CAN WE PREVENT THESE TYPES OF THINGS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN?

IN CLASS: Either write a paragraph or discuss answering this question from the perspective our class, our school, our nation.

DAY 7:

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY: I have also included on the additional activity document a 17 minute interview with the author.

OPTIONAL MAP/PHOTOS: I have included a number of maps and images of the camp as the detailed plans were released in 2008. It could even be a verbal inquisitive investigation into what might have been where at the camp?

The movie is 106 minutes long which means it is about 2 plus days of showing.
