The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is by far my favorite novel to read with my middle schoolers. This resource includes everything you need to complete a novel study and more!
What is included:
Student packet- The student packet is broken down into five four chapter segments (Chapters 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16, and 17-20). Each segment has a journal prompt, comprehension questions for each chapter, and a writing activity. There are worksheets that require the students to focus on setting, characters, theme and conflict. End of the novel writing activities are included. You can choose to have students complete all writing activities or choose one.
Teacher resources: The teacher’s resources include an answer key to all comprehension questions, chapter quizzes for each of the five segments (Chapters 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16, and 17-20), and an answer key for all quizzes. A final test is included that consists of matching, multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blank, and essay options. I have also included a book and movie comparison worksheet.
Updated 3/21/18: This novel study now also includes the following product: Chapter Graphic Organizers
designed this resource as a visual notetaking system for my students when reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This resource allows students to explore different aspects of the novel and pull out the important events themselves. I hope your students enjoy this novel as much as my students have for the past few years.
You can choose to use this resource many different ways. Here are some ideas:
Create a packet for students to work through at their own pace.
Divide the chapters into sections (example 1-4, 5-8, etc) and have students meet with a group to share their ideas after reading each section and completing the organizers.
Assign certain students to a section of chapters and have them present their information to the class and assign a new group of students to the next section of chapters.
Student Instruction Sheet
Before Reading Graphic Organizer
(1) Graphic Organizer for each chapter (Chapters 1-20)
Each chapter organizer provides students with the opportunity to:
Choose important or unknown words
Respond to literary elements
Choose an important quote
Summarize key events from the chapter
Illustrate an important scene
Research an aspect of the holocaust
Respond to a discussion question
I encourage students to use their graphic organizers as sketch notes. I allow them to doodle words and drawings in the white spaces and color any part of the graphic organizer.
