Directions and Themes - Literary Analysis: The Breadwinner
This lesson is for high school students in a Special Education learning support English classroom or in a Basic Level General Education classroom. It serves as a review of the novel The Breadwinner, as well as a planning tool from which students will write their literary analysis.
Despite using theme flags during reading, students still have a difficult time locating the specific evidence, although it is important for them to try. After an initial attempt, I provide students with a compilation of textual evidence. Not all students will need the completed chart of textual evidence, however in my experience many do. I only use the completed chart after students have done their work in groups to identify specific events that are related to each character and theme.
