Graphic Organizers
> The character graphic organizer is close-reading and specific to the novel. Not generic.

> Story plot graphic organizer. A career-long resource.

> Book Review Form. This can be used for any book/story! A career-long resource. Asks student to: describe protagonist, summarize book, state why they recommend it (or not) and why, and star rate it.

Three types of questions:

  • Short Response (complete sentences not required)
  • Complete Response (complete sentences required)
  • True/False

> About 7% of questions are open-ended thought questions to encourage independent thinking. The rest have right/wrong answers.

Example Questions

>Short Response

When will prisoners be taken into the stadium again?

Why does Shauzia have to dress as a boy and work?

What makes Parvana “put her anger away”?

Who wants to start a school?

>Complete Response

The reader learns that Parvana’s parents had a chance to leave Afghanistan at one time. What was father’s reason for why they needed to stay? Two sentences minimum.

How would you describe Mrs. Weera’s attitude? Two sentences minimum.How are Shauzia’s and Parvana’s lives similar? Two sentences minimum.


-Mrs. Weera and mother are breaking Taliban law.

Parvana feels proud of herself at the end of the day.

Parvana’s secret is that she is planning to move to France.


> Limitless journal for use throughout the novel. Teacher can dictate quantity and quality of entries.

> Includes cover page and an example entry.

> Student task is to collect quotes from the novel then respond to the line selected.
