This is a small group reader's theater is for 5 students. In the script - there is an old donkey, dog, cat, and rooster. Each one is being treated badly by their owners. Donkey decides to leave and to go try out for a band in Brennan Town. He figures animals singing will be so unusual that he can earn some money. On the way he meets the dog, the cat, and the rooster one at a time. He invites each one to come and try out for the band and each accepts. By nightfall they are looking for a place to stay and come upon some robbers in the woods. The animals scare the robbers away and decide to live in the robbers’ home. With the money the robbers left behind the animals are well taken care of for the rest of their lives.
There are is a writing prompt for the students to do at the bottom of the last page. Make sure students look at the vocabulary on the front page. I use reader's theaters to encourage my students to practice fluency. It is a fun way to do something that they need.
Most of my scripts are in black and white so they photo copy easily and do not waste ink. The problem with many other reader's theaters is that students spend a lot of time waiting for their part. When you have a small group they get more practice and you get less off task behaviors.
My name is Melanie Whitesides but my store name is Wonbyone and I hope that your students enjoy this script as much as mine did. If you like this script look for more fairy tale related scripts at my store. Please let me know how things go!
