Students will begin this assignment by watching the a documentary video clip about the Byzantine Empire. The video will focus on Emperor Justinian, the influence of Greek culture in the Byzantine Empire, The role of Orthodox Christianity in the Empire, and the Byzantine Empires longevity compared to its western counterpart, the Roman Empire. Students will be provided with a link that will also take them to an animated map that will show them the establishment, rise, and fall of the Byzantine Empire. Following the video, students will travel to the History.com website where they will first watch a video about the fall of the Byzantine capitol, Constantinople, to Turkish forces in the 14th century. Students will learn about the importance of the Byzantine capitol and why Islamic forces wanted to capture it. After the video, students will read an article which will provide a detailed history of the Byzantine Empire. The breakup of the Roman Empire into Western and Eastern (Byzantine) halves, the adoption of Orthodox Christianity, the rule of Justinian, the Crusades, the threat of Islam to the Empire, the eventual conquest of Constantinople, and the fall of the Byzantine Empire are all covered by the reading.
