The cajón (box drum) originated in Peru as a substitute drum used by enslaved people who were brought to that country. Although it has a sad origin, it also has a proud history of retaining African rhythms and cultural traditions within the new world and is an integral part of Afro-Peruvian as well as other Latin American musical traditions.
A children’s or beginner cajón can be made from any sturdy cardboard box and this pdf activity shares the basics of making one and discovering simple beats with it.
