NOTE: This guide is a supplement to The Hero’s Journey in Five Days, my basic guide for teaching the Hero’s Journey. It assumes that your students have already studied the Hero’s Journey archetype. If students have not studied the Hero's Journey, see The Hero's Journey in Five Days or The Hero’s Journey: A Comprehensive Guide for Teaching the Hero's Journey, which contains this material and much more.

THE CALL REFUSED: EVOKING THE SHADOW JOURNEY

The Call Refused is one of the most important elements in the Hero’s Journey. It’s the subject of much of our great literature and the shape of the many of life’s greatest challenges. The Call Refused: Evoking the Shadow Journey introduces students to the concept of refusing the Call. The unit uses three engaging lessons to help students understand how refusing the Call shapes characters and generates conflict in literature and film. More importantly, it encourages them to explore how refusing the Call might affect their own lives.

The guide's detailed lesson plans take you step-by-step through teaching and applying this important archetype. The lessons focus on how refusing the Call “converts the adventure into its negative” (Joseph Campbell), creating a parallel or “Shadow Journey.” The unit features these projects:

― an introduction to the Call Refused,

― a film project illustrating the Call Refused, and

― a Greek myth exploring the refusal of the call to public trust.

The guide contains everything you need to understand and teach the Call Refused, including:

― detailed lesson plans for all three projects,

― classroom materials (student texts, review questions and useful quotations),

― supplementary activities,

― dozens of quotes for writing and discussion, and

― resource material for teachers.

Also included is an in-depth exploration of the psychology of the Call Refused to give you the expertise you need not just to teach and explore the concept, but to apply it to other material in your own curriculum.
