This simple board game is designed to help students understand the difficulty of treating malignant cancer and how it can spread to the rest of the body. This activity works well with at least 3 students. One student plays the role of cancer, a second plays the role of an immune cell, and the third plays the role of the doctor. This activity can be modified for groups of 4-5 students. Two files are included in the zip/compressed download, a pdf of the game board and a modifiable PowerPoint containing the presentation and instructions for this cancer board game.
In addition to the PowerPoint and included game board file, you will need one 10-sided dice, one 6-sided dice, and enough tokens or game pieces to model the cancer and immune cells. Pennies make great tokens and game pieces for this activity and it is recommended to have about 20-30 or so per group. Finally, each round is expected to take around 5-20 minutes therefore it is useful to have students rotate their roles after each round.
