The Case of iTuned You Out is a problem solving scenario requiring students to work together to determine if wearing earbuds connected to an mp3 player can hinder hearing enough to cause a student to veer his bicycle in front of a following vehicle because he did not hear it coming.
Can the wearing of earbuds and/or playing of iPod music reduce the ability to hear an approaching vehicle? How can students find out? What evidence do they need and how can they get it? What conclusion does the evidence support? Hmmmm.....a mystery for evidence-seeking detectives!
In addition to problem solving, this scenario addresses iPod etiquette and the civic literacies involved.
