I use this lab when I talk about chemical reactions vs. physical reactions. Students LOVE doing this lab because it is very hands on and forces them to think about how they could go about solving the "crime". They use their inquiry skills to develop their own procedures as well as create their own lab report (a teacher can easily create a worksheet if they feel that their students are not ready for this level of independence).
This lab can be done for the following:
-General Science Skills
-Introduction to the Scientific Method
-Physical vs. Chemical Changes
-Introduction to inquiry based labs (Next generation/NGSS standards push for student inquiry)
