Elizabeth Winthrop’s classic fantasy fiction The Castle in the Attichas been and will continue to be a favorite of children for years. As a “teaching” novel, we could not ask for one better. Winthrop states the theme outright, uses literary devices such as foreshadowing, flashback, irony, and symbolism, and sprinkles imagery throughout, using figurative devices. In this packet, I have created four reading quizzes with a total of 104 questions. There are a variety of formats: T/F, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and matching. All quizzes have an answer key.
Do not waste your time creating reading assessments for this novel—use these instead. Spend your energy creating supplemental materials about castles and medieval living and supporting your students with their writing.
