This is a fantastic activity to begin reading the novel. The excerpt is the opening paragraphs of the novel and includes eight multiple-choice questions that can lead to discussion about their first impression of Holden. No matter what version of the text you are using, you can complete this activity as the text is formatted with line numbers. The question stems are mostly based on those from Part 1 (Passage A) of the NYS Common Core English Regents, so this activity is a good practice activity.
This is also a great way to expose students to J.D. Salinger's style, so even if you aren't teaching this novel, you can still use this activity.
Salinger, J.D. The Catcher in the Rye. Little Brown: Boston, 1991. Print.
1. Students, either independently, in small groups, or as a class, read the passage and answer the questions.
2. Review the answers and ask students to refer to the text to support their choices.
3. Discuss, or ask students to write, their first impression of Holden and/or Salinger's style.
