This puzzle is a fun method of ensuring that students are familiar with the more difficult words from chapters 1 - 3 of the novel by Theodore Taylor.
There are 32 clues in the crossword. Many of these are vocabulary related to the war and navigation. Words in the puzzle are.. aviation, ballast, bow, calypso, coward, deck, destroyer, drill, enemy, explosion, fort, freighter, fume, gable, galleon, ignite, keg, latitude, longitude, mutiny, navy, parched, pontoon, refinery, schooner, sextant, starboard, stern, submarine, tanker, torpedo and weapon.
This is a good exercise with which to start your study of The Cay. Chapters 1 - 3 are heavy with words that many students may not be familiar with. I like to pre-teach this vocabulary. Or better still, assign groups of students the dictionary work of finding and explaining definitions. Then the crossword becomes a matching exercise, and can be used competitively.
Students are actively learning when completing this task.
A word bank is supplied to support students.
