This 17 slide PowerPoint was created to enable students to visualize and become familiar with the habitats, sea life, and vocabulary found in The Cay. In our lesson plans we show the presentation before reading Chapter 16. It should be noted that we do use an introductory PowerPoint before we read to provide background information for our students. This second PowerPoint is a “refresher” that reviews and displays photographs of the setting, and specific vocabulary used throughout the book (i.e. sea grape, langosta, sea urchin, Devil’s Mouth, etc.) Please note that in the "langosta" slide a lobster with claws is intentionally included to compare and contrast langostas and lobsters.
Students appreciate reviewing these vocabulary words and corresponding photographs, as it enhances their understanding of the setting, plot, character actions, and character reactions. It also helps students better visualize what they are reading, as many of the terms used in the book are unfamiliar to many students. Also included are slides showing examples of Jumbi carvings and water catchments. This presentation really adds to the students’ enjoyment of the book, as they feel they are right there on the cay with Timothy, Phillip, and Stew Cat!
