Students listen to the song "Amazing Grace" (I use the Leann Rimes version on YouTube) and read the lyrics. They highlight a "snippet" (anything from a word to 2 sentences) that strikes them. They gather in a circle and share what they picked and why. They then analyze how the song connects to Phillip's prejudice of Timothy in The Cay. (Do this lesson after Phillip's blindness causes him to "see" Timothy clearly; beyond skin color). A handmade graphic and 5 student samples are also provided. This is was a very powerful activity.
