A great “hands-on” math activity to keep students involved in hectic holiday periods. Great in December, but this activity packet is not just for Christmas! Use it at Halloween, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, or before just about any holiday when you think students need something to pep them up and spark their interest. First of all, students will practice creating data sets, using the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), and using problem-solving processes. Vary the results by changing what they guess (Cheerios, Trix, Coco Puffs, M & M’s, etc). Students enjoy guessing and estimating the quantities and comparing their results with others. The 16-page packet includes notes for the teacher, a sample introductory lesson plan, vocabulary review sheet, student data collection record sheet, directions for the teacher for the Candy Jar Guess or Estimate activity, and student Candy Jar Guess or Estimate record sheets for several holidays (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter). A generic record is also included. The packet is designed for middle school students grades 5-8.
