Purpose: The overarching goal of this lesson is to teach students about the chemicals of life. This fits into the ‘bigger picture’ because it will help all students to realize that all chemicals such as water are made up of elements. Carbon, proteins, water, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids (the chemicals of life) are made up of smaller elements.
Objectives: As a result of this lesson SWBAT:
• Recognize that all chemicals are made up of elements, and elements are made up of atoms.
• Identify the basic chemicals of life: carbon, water, lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids.
• Give examples of each of these chemicals of life.
