In this 4-day lesson, students first do a close reading activity of The Circuit chapter 3 "Inside Out." This involves three interpretive goals -- key ideas & details, craft & structure, and integration of knowledge and meaning.
Next, students analyze how Francisco has changed since the beginning of the novel. They portray this transformation through a creative project called "The Butterfly."
Finally, students read informational text that address the argumentative prompt: Should public schools in the U.S. be taught only in English?" They then conduct a debate team carousel that requires them to collaborate and to look at the issue from both sides.
Also included is a PowerPoint of visuals that connect to the chapter and slides of bellwork questions that can be projected.
