Hi all! This is a novel study that I have created for teachers that love differentiated and varied lessons and activities for their students. I really enjoyed finding a new read aloud text for my 5th grade students and The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau is perfect! Being that I have taught 3rd grade for three years, I know the text would also be great for 3rd and 4th grade students. The novel study features student activities, example anchor charts, anticipatory sets, and varied lesson plans with 25 different reading and writing strategies for the text. The novel study addresses the following skills: reading comprehension, inferences, character traits, summarizing, before-, during-, and after-reading activities, friendly letter writing, and extended-constructed response opportunities. There are also activities that focus on social studies and geography skills, science experiments, writing, grammar, and mechanics. There are also word wall vocabulary words included in the teacher edition of the novel study.
This novel is great for cross-curricular connections. The story is about a community that is built in a dark place and the electricity is failing. These people do not know if a world exists outside of their dark city. However, two young students are trying to save the city, their families, and their own lives! I loved this book!
