This novel study of The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau includes approximately four weeks of activities and analysis of the novel aligned to the Common Core College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards. It is a high interest, science fiction novel that is best suited for upper elementary or middle school aged students.
The novel study includes skills of Inferencing/Predicting, Citing Text Evidence, Interpreting Figurative Language, Author's Word Choice, Symbolism, Comparing/Contrasting Texts in different forms, Summarizing, and Visualizing.
Lessons all begin with warm-up questions to check for understanding and elicit discussion. The lessons then utilize a gradual release method by modeling, using guided practice, and using independent practice. The independent practice can then be used for an assessment of each skill. Included are graphic organizers and worksheets to support each skill.
A Jeopardy-structured review game is included for a review of the novel.
Also included is an end-of-novel assessment including 5 multiple choice questions, 3 short-answer questions, and 1 essay question totaling 25 points. An answer key and rubric are included for the assessments.
