Everything you need to teach a complete City of Ember unit is included. Detailed comprehension questions, answer keys, vocabulary, story element analysis, projects, and engaging worksheets are all included in this City of Ember literature guide. A variety of City of Ember graphic organizers are also included. All activities are classroom tested and include creative handouts, information sheets, detailed instructions, foldables, templates, and rubrics! Very little teacher prep is needed – simply print and teach!

This package has been common core aligned for grades 4 and 5, but it can easily be used for grades 4-8. I commonly use this unit with grade 7's.

This creative and engaging package includes the following:

Reader’s Notebook Setup Information: Several pages of information on the benefits of Reader’s Notebooks. Detailed information on how to set up a Reader’s Notebook for the unit is also included. However, you do not need to do this unit as a Reader’s Notebook. It can easily be done as a traditional Novel Study – it is up to you!

Main Character Graphic Organizers: Graphic Organizers for each of the main characters in the novel, to help review key features using text evidence.

Comprehension Questions: Detailed comprehension questions for all chapters. A detailed answer key is also included!

Reading Strategy Based Questions: A full set of reading strategy based questions is included. These have no correct answer, but allow students to think deeply about the text. Students focus on making connections, visualizing, inferring, determining importance, analyzing, summarizing, evaluating, predicting, and questioning.

Vocabulary Words and Activities: A full set of vocabulary words, organized by page number, as well as two different vocabulary based graphic organizers to use with them.

Character Compare and Contrast: Two different Venn Diagram style graphic organizers, comparing and contrasting different characters from the novel

Going Through Their Head: A graphic organizer for students to imagine themselves as Lina during her escape at the end of the novel. Students illustrate and describe what was going through her head.

The City of Ember Graphic Organizer Set: A variety of different graphic organizers, for use with the novel. Different creative organizers to practice point of view, summarizing, questioning, making connections, point of view, finding key events using text evidence, making predictions, inferring, visualizing, and more are included! These can be used at any point in the novel, and are great for differentiated instruction, extra practice, or extension activities!

Elements of Literature Notes: A page of information on Plot, Character Types, Conflict, and Setting. A blank template for students to fill in is also included.

Elements of Literature in the Novel: A graphic organizer for students to fill in examples of Plot, Setting, Character Types, and Conflict found in the novel.

Elements of Literature Foldables: A foldable activity to review the elements of literature as seen in the novel is included. A larger foldable mini book activity to review the elements of literature in the novel is also included.

Final Project –The City of Ember Flap Book: All materials needed to create a Flap Book Final Project. To complete this project, students must reflect back on everything they have learned throughout the unit. Detailed instructions included!

Journal Starters: A full page of journal writing prompts to get students thinking about the novel.

Response Starter Foldable: A fun foldable to encourage student responses.

Pre-Reading Activity: Students look at the meaning of the word “Utopia” and brainstorm utopias of their own, and also examine the key features of a civilization (full detail page included) and predict ways these key features will be seen in the novel.

City of Ember Pamphlet Project: Full instructions for students to create a pamphlet advertising Ember. A great way for students to reflect on the novel’s setting!

Connections Foldable: A foldable to encourage students to make connections to what they read.

QTL Foldable: A foldable for students to encourage students to reflect on what they question, think, and learn.

Imagery Foldable: Detailed instructions and all the materials needed to create a foldable to review the novel’s imagery.

Create Your Own City Project: Detailed instructions for students to create cities of their own! This is a great final project that really gets kids thinking!

Assignment Day Activity: Students act out assignment day, choosing jobs from slips of paper at the front of the class. Students then answer a series of reflection questions based on their chosen jobs. A great way to engage students and introduce the novel!
