The Civil Rights Act Webquest with Key- this is an 8 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 13 questions from the history.com website.
Students will be asked to watch a video which will provide a history of the Civil Rights movement and Lyndon Johnson's eventual signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. An article with a detailed accounting of this historic legislation is also required reading before beginning the webquest. The conditions that African Americans lived under in the Jim Crow south, the creation of the Civil Rights Act by JFK, his assassination, the continued work of Lyndon Johnson to pass the bill, congressional opposition from the southern states (filibusters and amendments), the eventual passing of the bill to law, and the future legislation that followed the passing of the Civil Rights Act, are all covered in this activity.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
