It begins with a brief examination of the use of African-American soldiers, including the 54th Massachusetts and the massacre at Fort Pillow. It then highlights the battles of Chancellorsville, including the death of Thomas J. Jackson, Gettysburg, including Pickett's Charge, and the fall of Vicksburg. It then focuses on William T. Sherman and the concept of total war. The election of 1864 is covered including the party platforms and the outcome. It concludes with Grant's strategy in Virginia and sets up the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
