Every year when I start this unit I get the same question -- "Why are we learning history in English class??"
And every year I tell my whining students -- "Because literature must be inspired."
My quick response never makes the whining cease, but at least I feel like I have had my English teacher philosophizing moment of the day, and I call it a win for education. : )
This PowerPoint presentation does not encompass the entire Civil War; instead, it discusses the key characters of the Civil War (i.e. Abraham Lincoln) and the key events that inspired our reading.
Presentation includes 9 slides of historical information mixed with vocabulary enhancement, sentence structure alerts, connection questions, and inference detectors. This presentation also includes an exit slip activity for students to turn in afterward.
Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman are also introduced in this presentation.
