This product is a "Print and Teach" resource that can be used to introduce the novel, The Coffin Quilt by Ann Rinaldi. This resource includes step-by-step instructions on how to implement, teach, and model visual literacy skills-how to "read a picture". A lesson plan is included, as well as all handouts. Students "read" photographs from the time period of the novel's setting in order to make inferences about the time period.

The goal of this introductory novel lesson is to teach students not only how to analyze an image (visual literacy), but to also gain some background knowledge of the time period in which the novel is set.
