Are you looking for an activity that helps your students understand the key elements of the start of the Cold War and the division of Europe after World War II? If so, we've got just what you're looking for!
This "The Cold War Begins: The Iron Curtain Descends" Activity includes:
1) A document-based activity that will help your students understand the start of the Cold War. Students will identify and describe the importance of key events that sparked tension between the US and the USSR. These events include; the split of Germany, The Marshall Plan, The Truman Doctrine, The Berlin Blockade, Soviet Satellite Nations and the formation of NATO. Next, students will draw on a map the new look of the post-war Europe and what the divided Germany looks like. Finally, students will examine three documents about US post-war foreign policy. These documents include an excerpt from The Truman Doctrine Speech, the Marshall Plan Speech, and a letter from a Soviet Ambassador to Moscow. This will give students different points of view on the United States' goal in foreign policy.
This activity can be used in many different ways in the classroom. Students can work independently, in pairs or this activity can be used as a jigsaw in order to facilitate a class wide discussion about the topics discussed in the activity.
2) A detailed answer key to the lesson activity to save you time and help guide student comprehension.
