2) A covert operations designed activity that will probe your students on the causes of the massive arms buildup during the Cold War. Students will be asked about topics such as the detonation of the first Soviet atomic bomb, CIA involvement in regime change that took place in Iran and Guatemala, the Warsaw Pact, the Eisenhower Doctrine, Sputnik, and the U-2 Spy Plane incident. Once completed, your students will have a great understanding of the events leading to the the arms build-up and MAD.
This activity can be used in many different ways in the classroom. Students can work independently, in pairs or this activity can be used as a jigsaw in order to facilitate a class wide discussion about the topics discussed in the activity.
