The Cold War Thaws Newspaper is an excellent way to flip the classroom and have students become news reporters! This activity/summative project allows students to understand how the Cold War era came to an end. Students will become news reporters where their "editor" (teacher) will assign them to research and report on various aspects of the end of the Cold War era. Students will be provided with a chapter reading on the end of the Cold War and then will work with their group to conduct any further research on their topic to write a collaborative article. The articles written will then be published to the classroom newspaper (page 3 of resource). Students will read the newspaper and take notes using the graphic organizer (page 4 of resource) in order to understand how the Cold War ended.
The resource also includes a rubric that can be adjusted based on numbers/rating as well!
This is an excellent activity that emphasizes student ownership of the material where they became news reporters and apply their understanding of the Cold War to its ending by writing!
