This lesson, align to meet standards from the AP Lit CED's suggested Poetry Unit II, guides students through an analysis of Carolyn Forche's poem, "The Colonel."* It targets the following AP Lit Essential Skills (from the 2019 course update):

  • STR 3.C - Explain the function of structure in a text.
  • FIG 5.A - Distinguish between the literal and figurative meanings of words and phrases.
  • FIG 5.B - Explain the function of specific words and phrases in a text.
  • FIG 5.D - Identify and explain the function of an image or imagery.

It is designed to introduce advanced analysis by asking critical thinking questions to students as they explore the stanza by stanza, followed by detailed examples of annotations and poem analysis. This also comes with a student handout version of the poem with space for notes and annotation. The lesson culminates with a writing activity, where students can answer an AP-level prompt and demonstrate a line of reasoning. This can be expanded into a full essay or simply be brainstorming practice. This lesson is designed to take 30-45 minutes but expansion opportunities are included. Each file is available in both PDF and Microsoft Office form and is fully editable.

*Please note, this poem contains one use of explicit language. The slideshow addresses the purpose behind this use, and the literary merit present in the poem despite strong language.
