This product contains a two-page script (two columns of text per page) written with the context of a time travel vehicle called “The Radical Time Rewinder” that transports passengers back in time to the colony of Saint Augustine.
(NOTE: This script can also be found in a collection called “Five Colonies of the New World” in my store. The collection uses the same time travel vehicle context—with a stop at each colony. The five colonies “visited” are:
--The Colony of Saint Augustine
--The Colony of Roanoke
--The Colony of Jamestown
--The Colony of Plymouth
--The Colony of Saint Mary’s City)
The Saint Augustine script provides a very BRIEF review of basic information about the colony. There are 16 solo speakers with many parts for ALL so that teachers can use the script with a whole class. If you need more solo parts or fewer solo parts, it’s easy to make adjustments by changing the numerals that indicate the solo speakers’ lines before you photocopy and distribute the script to students.
Reading and rehearsing the scripts familiarizes students with the content information while also increasing reading fluency and engaging students in a dramatic approach to learning facts. A fluent and expressive read-through/performance of this whole script takes about 7 minutes. (It was developed with a class of 4th graders in Maryland.)
Students enjoy creating and performing gestures and sound effects where indicated in the stage directions. And—because it is a script—they do not mind reading and re-reading the information.
For more details and tips about using these scripts with students, you may want to download the FREE copy of "CURRICULUM-BASED READERS THEATRE: A Guide to the Classroom Use of this Strategy" available in my store.
