Product Description
This product is a must have for AP U.S. History or even AP World History teachers!

This is a single day lesson plan that I put together to provide an overview of early native societies, European motives for exploration, and the impact of the Columbian Exchange. While this lesson provides in-depth content, it still allows only a single day spent on the topic…allowing AP teachers to continue teaching at the AP pace. This is the first lesson I teach in my APUSH classroom.
Note: *This lesson is still a great lesson for non-AP courses, though it has an AP U.S. History focus

For American History classes, the Columbian Exchange is an important topic to cover, but often teacher do not want to spend too much time on. This lesson focuses not only on the impacts of the Columbian Exchange on both the Old World and New World, but motivations for European exploration and the complexity of New World societies as well.

Though there is some direct instruction by use of a PowerPoint presentation, the lesson is broken up into numerous segments that transition students smoothly through the lesson. In this lesson, students will examine two opposing primary source viewpoints (de Sepulveda vs de Las Casas) regarding how native populations should be viewed and treated. Students will respond to the overall message of the sources, but will also evaluate the validity of the views provided.

Additionally, students will read a brief overview of detriments and benefits of the Columbian Exchange upon both Old and New Worlds. Using this lesson, the teacher can organize a mini-debate/deliberation among small groups of students to get them to collaborate, communicate, and evaluate the impacts of the Columbian Exchange.

Included are two formative options teachers can select to assess student learning.

I have received great results and reactions from my students and colleagues from this 75-90 minute lesson.
