This Constructed Response Question (CRQ) serves as both an introduction to Regents-style CRQs and a summative assessment for a Columbian Exchange unit. Students will analyze two documents before explaining the historical context of the first and determining the purpose and reliability of the second. Students then write an extended response on the causes and effects of the Columbian Exchange using both document and outside information. The first document is from the journal of Christopher Columbus. The teacher can choose from two documents for the second. One is an Aztec illustration of a smallpox victim; the other a poem written by an Aztec poet after the Spanish Conquest. Remember to use only one or the other!
